Quotable Notables: Dietrich Bonhoeffer

“We must be ready to allow ourselves to be interrupted by God.”

Isaiah 55:8-9 says “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways And My thoughts than your thoughts” (NASB). Our perspective does not always match God’s perspective; He has plans for us, for our ultimate good (see Jeremiah 29:11), but they aren’t always the same as our plans. They are, however, always the best plans, so when God seeks to interrupt us, we should not only allow Him to do so, but actively seek to work with Him to make His plans come to fruition.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a German pastor and theologian who wrote about Christian discipleship, ethics, and community. One of his key works, The Cost of Discipleship, is a meditation on the Sermon on the Mount in which he writes about what it means to follow Christ. Bonhoeffer actively opposed the Nazi regime and eventually participated in a conspiracy that unsuccessfully attempted to assassinate Hitler. He was imprisoned and eventually executed shortly before the end of WWII.
